We had a chat with the founder of Resonate, a new Berlin-based music streaming service that aims to be fairer in terms of distributing royalties to artists. They are building Resonate as a co-operative as it allows everyone involved (fans, musicians, independent labels and workers) to have a say in how the company runs. This forms one of the key ideas behind Resonate — that all musicians should have the opportunity to own their own streaming service, and not just mega-rich stars. It's really bringing democracy to the industry.
Resonate just received a $1 million investment to develop the company. Resonate is trying to apply a blockchain (the same technology used in Bitcoin) to a music streaming platform. Their aim is to use the transparency and power of blockchains to create the ethical and technological next step in streaming.
