We will especially be looking at stations who do a lot to support emerging and ‘alternative’ music.

IndieXL is an online radio station based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The station focuses on the latest in Indie and Alternative music from both local and international artists. The station was started in 2013 by music enthusiasts André Wit and Dennis van Leeuwen who maintain close ties to the local music scene which allows them to find and access new releases quickly.

A look at IndieXL’s top 10 played tracks from week 5 shows their strong focus on the diversity of the Indie and Alternative scenes.  The list, for instance, is completely dominated by independent labels. The most played track is by Nilüfer Yanya, a young British singer with a unique style of soulful indie-pop. She releases music on ATO Records, one of the most interesting independent labels out there and also home to Alabama Shakes, Benjamin Booker and many more.

The post-punk band The White Lies who release music on PIAS, a large independent label originally founded in Belgium are at number two with their latest single ‘Tokyo’ and releases by other independent acts like US indie rockers Broken Bells, UK punk rock group Frank and The Rattlesnakes and the Swiss industrial rock band The Young Gods are also to be found on the list.

Just outside of the top 10 local artists like De Staat and Pip Blom from the Netherlands as well as the Belgian band Balthazar, are also getting plenty of love.
