Is this segment, we spotlight some of the many interesting radio stations that are currently broadcasting around the world.
We want to put a face on some of the many stations that WARM monitors and show just how much quality and variety still exists out there when it comes to radio programming. We will especially be looking at stations who do a lot to support emerging and ‘alternative’ music.
KUTX 98.9 is a popular radio station in Austin, Texas – a city known for, among other things, hosting the festivals South by South West (SXSW) and Austin City Limits (ACL).
KUTX, which has over 80.000 followers across their social channels, has a great approach to music programming and is far from your typical Top 40 station. For one thing, they do a lot to support local artists. In their ‘Artist of The Month’ series, they spotlight a new release from a Texas artist and give you a sneak peek at new music and some insight into the artist behind it. They also host the podcast ‘This Song’ where a diverse range of artists discuss songs that changed their lives and give a glimpse into their creative process.
Their top 10 airplay chart for the first week of 2019 illustrates their eclectic and diverse programming philosophy. The list includes indie pop from Milo Greene and Blood Orange, indie rock by Mitski and Steve Gunn and soul/funk by Anderson.Paak and Jungle.
Interestingly, the most played track of the week was ‘One Woman Man’, a track by Adrian Quesada, a local artist who is best known in the Texas area. It seems like KUTX are living up to their claim to play music ‘that is hand-picked for its substance, integrity, and perspective’.
