Radio Station Spotlight: WUSB 90.1 FM (Long Island, New York)

Is this segment, we spotlight some of the many interesting radio stations that are currently broadcasting around the world. We want to put a face on some of the many stations that WARM monitors and show just how much quality and variety still exists out there when it comes to radio programming. We will especially be looking at stations who do a lot to support emerging and ‘alternative’ music.

WUSB 90.1 FM is a radio station based in Long Island, New York. It is Long Island’s largest non-commercial, free-form radio station which means that their DJs and presenters have the freedom to play whatever they want regardless of genre or commercial interests.

The station is owned and operated by the State University of New York at Stony Brook and has been broadcasting since 1977. Its 24/7 programming offers a diverse broadcast mix of music, news, public affairs, drama, and sports programming. Their FM signal mainly covers the New York and Connecticut area the but can also be heard over the internet.

WUSB 90.1 FM is staffed by roughly 150 volunteers and listeners can tune in to a super eclectic mix of ‘jazz, pop, punk, metal, electronic, noise, funk, folk, blues, reggae, polka, world music, live music, spontaneous mixes, and groovy combustion. ‘
