French Radio Embraces Viagra Boys’ Swedish Punk

The Swedish post-punk band Viagra Boys are doing quite well at the moment.

The band, which was formed in 2015 in Stockholm, are currently signed to YEAR 0001, the label that’s perhaps best known as the home to Swedish rap sensation Yung Lean.

Viagra Boys released their debut album Street Worms in 2018 and the most successful single from the album on both streaming services and radio stations so far is the song ‘Sports’. Interestingly, while Viagra Boys are mostly streaming well at home and in markets like the UK and the US, when it comes to radio, one place ‘Sports’ is making a huge impact is in France.

So far ‘Sports’ has gotten a total amount of 1654 radio spins in 2019. The largest amount of total airplay comes from the United States where it has 578 plays across 84 radio stations in 70 cities. This includes well-respected tastemaker stations like KCRW in Los Angeles and KEXP in Seattle as well as several university stations.

This, however, is followed closely by France where the song has been played 437 times across 30 stations in 28 cities. Considering how much smaller the French market is compared to the US, it’s safe to say that the French are seriously digging the track.

Radio stations who have played ‘Sports’ include the popular La Grosse Radio Rock and Canal B which reach wide audiences in the Paris area and Rennes respectively. Alternantes in Nantes is another big supporter. ‘Sports’ also seems to be connecting well with French students. University radio stations in Paris, Lille, and Amiens have all taken to the track and have it in regular rotation.

Considering that at least 40 % of the music played on private French radio stations must be of French origin, this is even more impressive.

The Viagra Boys have been touring throughout 2019, but don’t yet appear to have made their way to France. Considering the strong support they are currently getting from French radio, perhaps that is something they should consider in the near future.
